25th March

Joan of Arc: born in Lorraine (1412), burned alive as a heretic in Rouen (1431). Beautified on her way to becoming a Saint here in Paris (1909).

Her story is complicated, but surely has to be one the best arguments against the death penalty. Proof that even those close to God can get it wrong, and that unfortunately when you burn someone alive, there is no "undo" function.

Seeing her statue in La Cathédrale de Notre Dame I wanted to light a candle in her memory, but I was 7 centimes short of the recommended 2€ donation.

I gave everything I had and lit the candle anyway, hoping that she, and the church, could also be a little flexible in the way they count things.
